Sweet Orange Blues

It comes down to being authentic and it comes down to being believable. This snippet is very short, but it’s a great example of what I’m referring to. (But let’s be honest, I could’ve chosen any song from any of his concerts…)

I believe him when he’s singing; ’Don’t you think we oughta know by now?‘ 

Heartbreaking lyrics set to an earnest, almost helpless sounding voice. That’s a painted picture that breaks my heart. And it’s almost masochistic in a way, but I want that from a song like “Slow Dancing”. It’s such a brutal yet beautiful song that I want a live performance to be reflective of that. John is lucky though, it’s innate in him. (I only needed a short excerpt from a performance to prove my point.) Of course it helps that he writes his own work, but regardless of that, I believe every word he’s singing, every damn night that he’s on a stage.
